Meet Wendy

Wendy, M.Div., earned her Master of Divinity degree researching world religions and the mystic traditions, and is an active member of the rich interfaith community in Kansas City.

In studying divinity, Wendy has sought to reclaim the more esoteric traditions of her own family history. With a nod to her Bohemian (Čermná) and Moravian (Vsetín) roots, she has spent the past decade immersed in the Tarot, reading at events since 2016.

Wendy believes spirituality is meant to be a call-and-response with the Great Mystery, as much about listening as praying. She believes the Universe is eager to speak to us, using any language we embrace-including the symbolic language of the Tarot-to guide and illumine our lives.

FAQs

What is the cost for a party, and what forms of payment do you take?

Arrangement #1 – no tip jar: $40 standalone booking fee + $80 / hour; two hours minimum (covers all the readings)

Arrangement #2 – guests can tip: $40 standalone booking fee (paid by host) + $60 / hour; two hours minimum (tip jar & QR code available for guests for optional tips)

Contact wendyleia@yahoo.com to arrange payment; booking fee holds the date, is non-refundable, and does not apply toward hourly costs.

Cash, check and Venmo accepted.

How many guests (querents) can you read for in an hour?

Wendy can read for five guests within an hour. Sessions are 10 minutes, allowing 1 minute transition time between readings to clear the cards, and a 5 minute break each hour. Due to time constraints, Wendy often cannot get to each guest unless it’s a small party, but very often people take inspiration listening to others’ readings.

Do I need to set up anything?

Wendy will bring her own table, chairs and Bohemian decor, or can use a table and two chairs that are already available. No separate space is required – in fact, open readings draw in crowds, adding to the energy and fun!

What if I forget which cards were in my reading and their meaning?

Unique to Wendy’s events, each querent receives a complimentary written summary of their reading to take home, reviewing each card and the meaning of its placement. These notes contain a QR code that links to this website for further study – see Card Meanings section below.

Do you use specific cards and spreads?

Wendy’s beloved deck – in keeping with her Bohemian roots – is the Golden Art Nouveau Tarot (a traditional Rider-Waite-Smith deck, with embellishments inspired by Czech artist Alfons Mucha). Her favorite spread for parties is the Celtic Cross spread, which provides deep insights into a querent’s life. However, depending on theme and event requirements, Wendy can read from other cards and spreads.

Are the readings ever negative?

While some cards can indicate struggles and “negative” emotions (conflict, feeling stuck, left out, or broken-hearted), Wendy’s readings do not reveal impending tragedies like illness, death or certain loss. Even the card “Death” augurs not so much physical death, but transformation and new beginnings.

And, no future outcome is ever certain. The cards can show how energy is trending and how to course correct one’s current situation rather than predict a certain future.

It’s not the cards we’re dealt in life, but how we play them – Tarot gives us the wisdom and guidance to play our cards well.

Are Tarot readings religious?

Wendy’s Tarot readings are not religious, but symbolic and archetypal, similar to dreams.

As a student of divinity, however, Wendy finds Tarot and religion coincide with a happy conscience.

Examples of divination in the Judeo-Christian tradition are many: the Israelites and Apostles consult the Urim and Thummim and cast lots, Gideon divines God’s will through a dewy fleece, the Josephs of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament interpret dreams, and the Magi follow a star.

Sacred scriptures of varied religions are steeped in divination, written centuries and millennia before Tarot’s emergence as we know it today in the 15th century. They do not provide commentary on the Tarot.

“Wendy is very in tune with the spiritual world.”
